Greenberg is an intelligent, dramatic and a dark comedy movie written and directed by the renowned Noah Baumbach. The story of this movie revolves around a man at war with the world. It is a realistic movie in which the strengths of the directly are displayed in the characters. The concept of the film talks about how self involvement can hurt the people around.
Greenberg, a moody film, has been presented in a delightful way using simple technical style by the very talented film maker. The story goes on around two main characters named Roger Greenberg and Florence. Roger Greenberg is an ill fated and unfortunate guy, rather a mental case, who after being released from a mental hospital or rehab, plans nothing about his life.
Roger gives off the lifestyle and attitude of a person who has no goals or ambition in life. He often keeps on sending angry and awkward letters to numerous organizations about problems like noise pollution, seating in airlines and other issues. Florence, the other main character, is a young woman who is out of college and tries to find herself and she sleeps around but only because of boredom. Both Roger and Florence will go through their life crisis in the situation when Roger Greenberg shifts to his brother’s place. He looks after his brother’s home when he is out on a vacation. Meanwhile, Roger appoints Florence as the house assistant. Roger Greenberg finds it very difficult to start any relationship even if he starts; it goes on a very awkward way. It appears really hard for Roger to make any new contacts and to connect with them because of the reason he still has his focus on his past life whereas, Florence is entirely opposite to him. She is a preoccupied woman with high spirits and witticism nature. Roger is a lot self-involved and can never dedicate himself to any other person.
Roger faced no new changes in his life and still behaves like a child and tries to always defend his decision and this behavior of him, has destroyed the career of his best friend, who was a musician. Though the character Roger Greenberg is more about a destructive protagonist but it gives a strong statement that is very much relevant to the current society which at times supports the bad behavior and careless actions.
The actor Ben Stiller played the lead character Roger Greenberg, Greta Gerwig as Florence, Roger’s friend Ivan Schrank is played by Rhys Ifans and Jennifer Jason Leigh as his ex-girlfriend. Though the script of the movie is a bit weak, but all of them gave solid performances in the film.
